UPSC Geologist Exam 2017

Every year the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) invites application for the Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination. The candidates who are interested can apply for the exam after fulfilling the eligibility criteria. There are more than 200 posts available for the candidates. There are 2 categories in this exam.
1. Category I – Posts in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines
2. Category II – Posts in the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources
Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist falls under Category I and Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) falls under Category II.

About UPSC Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam
The subject that is concerned about the evolution, structure and dynamics of the earth, energy resources and the natural resources, is known as Geology. It has allied disciplines as well. As far as Hydrogeologist is concerned, it is all about water that is present on the surface of the earth and below.

Eligibility Criteria for Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
The eligibility criteria are set in three stages and only those candidates who have fulfilled all the criteria will be allowed for the exam.
Citizenship: He or she must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan. In case of a Tibetan refugee, the candidate will only be allowed if he or she has come to India prior to 1st January, 1962 with the sole intention of settling down permanently.
Age Limit: For Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist the age limit is 21 years to 32 years, whereas for the Junior Hydrogeologists, the candidates must be within the age group of 21 -35 years. In case of reserved category, there is some age relaxation provided.

Geologist: Master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo Exploration/ Mineral Exploration/ Engineering Geology/ Marine Geology/ Earth Science and Resource Management/ Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies/ Petroleum Geosciences/ Petroleum Exploration/ Geochemistry/ Geological Technology/ Geophysical Technology
Geophysicist: MSc in Physics/ Applied Physics/ MSc in Geophysics or Integrated MSc in Exploration Geophysics or MSc in Applied Geophysics/ Marine Geophysics or MSc (Tech) in Applied Geophysics
Chemists: MSc in Chemistry/ Applied Chemistry/ Analytical Chemistry
Junior Hydrogeologists: Master degree in Applied Geology/ Geology/ Marine Geology and Hydrology.

Application Fee for Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
All the candidates are required to pay a sum of Rs. 200 in any of the SBI branch by cash or they can go online and deposit the amount through their Master or Visa debit or Credit card.

• The candidates can only apply online, so they have to visit the official website of UPSC, upsconline.nic.in.
• Once the candidate is there, they need to click on the link for CGSE/GE application form
• It is advisable that the candidates go through the instructions carefully before filling up the form.

Syllabus of Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
The General English questions will be in a pattern that is expected out of a Science Graduate. The other papers that are there will consist of questions that are of MSc standard. The questions are set in such a manner that it will help in judging the candidates’ knowledge over the subject matter.

The candidates will get 4 papers in every category and the General English is the common paper for all the categories. This is a conventional type examination.

Personality test is also held by the Commission and it carries a maximum of 200 marks.

Admit card of Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
The admit card is also available online. In order to download the e-admit card, the candidate will have to visit the official website i.e. www.upsconline.nic.in. There the candidate can download the hall ticket by providing details like their name or registration number. Once they provide that, they will find a link for downloading the e-admit card. There is a page stating the ‘Important Instructions’, the candidates need to download that page too, along with their e-admit card.

Results of Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
The candidates will receive their results online. They need to keep the registration number or the roll number handy in order to check the result online. The candidates who qualify the written exam will be called for the Interview/ Personality Test.

Important Dates of Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam 2017
Important dates of the UPSC Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist Exam are as follows:
• Notification Date – By the end of February 2017, notification of the exam will be circulated
• Last Application date – By the 3rd week of March, 2017, the candidates need to submit their application form
• UPSC CGS and GE exam e-admit card will be available to download from 2nd week of April 2017.
• Date of Exam – The exam will be held for 3 days and it will start from the last week of May 2017.
• CGS/GE exam results are published in the 1st week of June 2017.
